Based in Koukourarata, Maria Lee has been a practicing artist for over 30 years.  She has a degree in Visual Arts and Design.  Maria’s carving balances contemporary and traditional sculpting processes to create feminine sculptures whilst remaining minimalist and preserving the nature of the found rock. Focusing on found, non-precious rocks, Maria’s art shows the beauty contained within the ordinary.

Maria Lee has continued exploring the boundaries between raw rock and smooth manipulated polished finished stone as she explores female sensual forms and positive expressions of sexuality.  The sensual softness of form juxtaposes the rigidity of the stone; the strength and violence it requires to create a piece that appears soft and invites touch.

Maria works to influence the viewers perception of beauty by encouraging them to seek a viewpoint outside of the orthodox social constructs. When people experience her work, she wants them to experience beauty and divinity, not erotic objectification of the vulva.
