Richie Te Heuheu

Māori Toi Artist

Ko Richie toku ingoa

(Ngāti Tūwharetoa

Ngāi Tahu)

Is a Māori toi artist based in Ōtautahi. His creative journey began in childhood, drawing and creating Māori art that has continued to evolve throughout his life. After an apprenticeship in tattooing and years working in scaffolding, Richie has returned to his roots through mahi whakairo and toi arts — exploring both traditional and contemporary forms of Māori art.

Working across different mediums, Richie’s practice is a reflection of his connection to whakapapa, whenua, and wairua. His work speaks to identity and growth — a personal and spiritual exploration of self through te ao Māori. Each piece is a step toward understanding the layers of who he is, where he comes from, and the stories carried within his hands.
