Sage Rossie-Tong is a non binary interdisciplinary artist. Their multimedia practice weaves together photography with diverse elements including sculpture, printmaking and textiles. Born and raised in the hills of Ōhinehou, the landscapes of Te Whakaraupō provide grounding for both their life and art.
Rossie-Tong explores interactions of media and different processes to create unique outcomes. This holds a mirror to their diverse whakapapa which includes Dutch, Chinese, Jamaican, Irish, Scottish, Welsh and Scandinavian. Their work has an auto-ethnographic nature. Elements of self portraiture, be it direct or otherwise, are frequently identifiable due to the introspective nature of their process. They use art as a vehicle for appreciation, connection and transformation. Their practice challenges perspectives through the investigation of fluidity between perceptions; relishing the liberation that can be found in the in-betweens.
Sage holds a first class honours in photography from Massey University’s Bachelor of Design as well as a Graduate Diploma in Fine Arts. Their work is held in the collections of Enjoy Public Art Gallery and Te Papa, with their self published photobook, Mooning the Sun, a finalist in the 2022 Aotearoa Photo book Awards.
