Selena Tapae

Various Bloodlines

Te Arawa

Middle child.

I am here.

The majesty of Hakaroa…the Horizon line of the south pacific and an enveloping  Mulberry tree, planted on the fertile slopes of Te Tihi o KahuKura are the roots of my ‘U-kai-Po’.

The imagery of my childhood years is steeped in the handy work and collaborative production  of shadows and marionettes…all alive through the form of puppet theatre.

The modes that mould some soul from the humm of my existence at present; present themselves as a cyclic circle of:

Iron/ Blacksmithing – by the Grace of Les Shenkel at the Teddington Forge.

Growing, drying, remedy making and ingesting the herb Artemisia Vulgaris; commonly known as Mugwort.

Deepening my knowledge of Hina through the light of te Maramataka.

Gathering fur, stitching leather- building momentum into belt craft.

Being a Mother…to a Tama Ataahua.

Regularly residing at the oceans edge… for: reset, reminisce, romance, renewal, kuku and long strands of seaweed.

I have two children of the stars and one of earth. Days that feel like borrowed time; come and go…death parallels living.

I find solace in allowing Space and the tone of Black to form a nest, ready for the passage of being less dense.

Thankyou for reading my story.
